Waterfront land offer ’still stands’

A MILLIONAIRE who said he would buy part of the waterfront and give it back to Islanders says his offer still stands.

Stuart Weaving thinks that the gardens on the waterfront should be extended and last year offered the Waterfront Enterprise Board £1 million for a strip of land on the site.

Following the withdrawal of leisure company Center Parcs from the proposed development by Crossland Homes, Mr Weaving has written to WEB saying his offer is still in place.

Speaking from his home in Marina Court, opposite the site, he said: ‘The offer has always been in place, I just thought that I would remind them it was there.’ He said that he was interested in buying land adjacent to Jardins de la Mer, from the skate park to the new hotel car park, and donating it to either the States or the parish of St Helier.

He said that he would want to create gardens where people could kick a football around and enjoy the location beside the sea.

He said: ‘I just think if I could have any influence on extending Jardins de la Mer, even 20 yards in an easterly direction, for the benefit of the people of Jersey, that would be good.

I would then donate the land to be grassed over and used for sport and recreation for the people of Jersey on the understanding that there are to be no buildings on the site.’ WEB finance and administration director Rafe Woolf said the board had considered Mr Weaving’s offer when he first made it in September of last year.

He said: ‘They considered it and left it on file because they were in a position where they were talking to Crossland, who has the support of the board as our preferred development partner on that site.’
