Driver will miss out

ALL-ROUNDER Ryan Driver is ineligible to represent the Jersey in the next month’s ICC tournament in Scotland.

Driver’s appearance at the tournament has been blocked because he has not been an Island resident for the four years required by ICC rules.

Jersey Cricket Board president Keith Dennis said: ‘Last week we applied for dispensation for Ryan to play but it was turned down.

‘We were hoping for special dispensation but it was refused.

‘It’s a great shame Ryan will now not be playing, but he will not miss the tournament because he is coming with us as team coach.’ Driver’s eligibility was questioned because he has only been resident in Jersey since taking up a sports teacher r๚le at Le Rocquier School in January 2005.

The ICC’s qualification criteria states that a player who has resided for a minimum of 183 days in a member country [Jersey] in each of the four immediately preceding years shall be a ‘deemed national’ of that country for the purpose of their rules.

Driver, a former professional with Lancashire and Worcestershire for six years together with later playing for Cornwall in the Minor Counties League, will assist Jersey as they make their ICC début against Norway, Israel and France.
