Health spend £15m on computer system

HEALTH and Social Services have been given up to £15 million in capital funding to set up an integrated computer link between the department and GPs.

The scheme, which will take three years to implement, is regarded as urgent by the department because their current provider and servicing agent cannot guarantee to continue technical support after 2008.

Last week in the States Health Minister Stuart Syvret said that the department regarded this as a high-risk situation.

Senator Syvret was answering a question by Deputy Roy Le Hérissier about the cost of the proposed GP link.

He wanted to know how much had been spent on the project so far, what the overall cost would be and when it would be completed.

Senator Syvret said that GPs and consultants in the Island had both demanded state-of-the-art ICT systems and had made it clear that their ability to expand the health system’s capacity and capability to manage the Island’s increasingly unhealthy state was dependent on such systems.
