THE current heatwave is likely to lead to a maximum temperature today of 31นC and is due to last until Wednesday evening.
Saturday was warm and sunny with a maximum of 23.7นC, which rose to a hot 29.5นC yesterday, and resulted in a minimum early this morning of 17.5นC.
Medical Officer of Health Dr Rosemary Geller warned that babies, young children and the elderly were particularly at risk from extreme temperatures.
‘Babies should be kept as cool as possible in their cots without blankets to prevent overheating, and as always, should be laid on their backs,’ she said.
Dr Geller advised that everyone should drink more fluids and avoid travelling and sunbathing during the hottest times of the day.
Sunscreens used should be of factor 15 and above.
She advised anyone with elderly neighbours or relatives to check they were coping with the heat or needed assistance.
Other sensible measures include taking cool showers, wearing sunglasses to guard against early cataracts and eating cold food like salad and fruit.
