ISLANDERS will be free to use the two swimming pools at the Aquasplash centre at the waterfront on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
States Members yesterday voted to back St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft’s proposition by 28 votes to 17 to force Education to stop blocking off the main and leisure pools for private parties.
Education Minister Mike Vibert said that the move would cost the department £20,000 in lost revenue for party fees, but Mr Crowcroft’s argument was that the pool was meant to be a direct replacement for the one at Fort Regent and that it was paid for by taxpayers’ money.
Les Quennevais residents had access to a pool, he said, and so should those in St Helier.
‘Is it fair that people out west have that sort of access to a municipal pool and those in St Helier have very restricted access at weekends? I think that is wrong,’ said the Constable, who suggested the new Langford swimming pool at Mont Millais could be used for children’s parties.
