THE public have made it overwhelmingly clear they do not want a tax imposed on vehicle emissions.
The majority who have responded to a consultative document put forward by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen and Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur have said they do not believe that move would be a fair way to collect the equivalent of the vehicle registration duty and environmental funds. In advance of the report being published next month and forwarded to the Treasury for recommendations to be made to the States, Senator Cohen said the overwhelming response from the public had been they would prefer a small duty to be placed on petrol instead.
