Grimes bowls into last eight

JERSEY bowler Christine Grimes has completed her group proramme in the WBL Women’s World Cup in Warilla in New South Wales.

Although Grimes lost some games she might have been expected to win, her habit of pulling off notable victories over the tournament favourites meant she qualified for the quarter finals, which will be played tomorrow.

Wins over Commonwealth Games champion Siti Zalina Ahmad and top Aussie Judy Nardella were the highlights of her campaign, but the match that sealed her place in the last eight was the desperately close 7-6, 7-8, 2-1 win over Metta Jennison, from Thailand.

Indeed, the Jersey star’s loss in her final group game - Spain’s Lynne Metcalfe piped her by an equally nail-biting 9-6, 8-9, 2-1 margin - was academic, because she had already made sure she would be appearing in the knockout stage.

Back at Belfast, Guernsey’s Alison Merrien slipped up in the semi finals of the WIBC event, while her fellow Sarnian Gary Pitschou matched the legendary Mervyn King every step of the way in the men’s final, before the England star got home, 8-7, 9-6.
