New fire chief from England

THE next fire chief will be the first to be appointed from outside the Island.

Essex fireman Mark James (40) will take over from Chief Fire Officer Francis Greene when he retires at the end of June. Mr James is currently deputy director of civil resilience and emergency planning in the county’s Fire and Rescue Service. Joining the service in 1989, Mr James has served all of his career with the Essex brigade, although he was seconded for two years to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Home Affairs chief officer Steven Austin-Vautier said that choosing someone from outside the Island was in line with a Stateswide policy for departmental heads.
