JERSEY RFC’s 1st XV warmed up for next week’s Siam Cup by taking on Midlands 2 West Division winners, Kenilworth, at St Peter on Saturday - and losing to them 15-12.
Afterwards the club’s director of rugby, Dai Burton, said that the result was irrelevant; the nature of the game, however, was the right kind of preparation his team needed for the annual grudge match against Guernsey.
‘They had some good forwards who mixed it, virtually from the start,’ he said.
‘They also had former England prop Darren Garforth, who took out Darren Toudic with a shockingly bad tackle.
He was sin-binned for that, but as he was concussed, Darren seems certain to miss next week’s Siam Cup.
‘We were missing three of our regular threes, which made a difference, but after it was 12-all with ten minutes to go and they kicked a penalty, to go in front 15-12, we could have kicked a penalty of our own a few minutes later but didn’t.
‘What was the point in simply drawing again? ‘They were a tough side, but that’s probably what we needed, before next weekend’s game.
We were also able to bring some of the youth team’s boys on right at the end .
