JERSEY’S Christine Grimes, who turned on the style to qualify for the knockout stages of the WBL World Cup at Warilla in New South Wales, was knocked out in the quarter-finals today by top New Zealander Val Smith.
With the top four from each group qualifying, the battling Grimes grabbed her place in the last eight after tying in fourth place with Spain’s Lynne Metcalfe and America’s Rosa Gandara.
Losing to Metcalfe in her last group game, she had earned her quarter final spot with a superior shots difference - Grimes had a shots credit of +19, compared with the Spaniard’s +3, with Gandara back in sixth place with -5.
Smith, a triples bronze medalist at World Bowls in Royal Leamington Spa in 2004, had topped her section with eight wins in as many matches, and, though Grimes put up stern resistance, the talented Kiwi continued her winning ways with a 9-7, 9-3 victory.
