Under-12s impress coach at Essex Open netball tournament

JERSEY Whites fulfilled their potential to reach the semi final of the Essex Open Netball Tournament at the weekend.

The under-12 team started strongly in the tournament with a 9-1 victory over Essex Open B, a 4-1 win over New Campbell A and a 14-1 win over Notts City.

However, the stumbling block came when Whites met Turnford, a very physical side.

Whites were overcome and suffered their only defeat of the qualifying rounds with a 10-1 loss but they soon bounced back and recorded two resounding wins - 10-2 over Poole and 11-1 against CD Phoenix.

Jersey’s second U12 team, Jersey Reds, opened their account with a 12-0 whitewash of New Campbell B.

They continued to dominate as they beat Essex Open C 6-1, Marshalls 13-1, Star 8-6 and Tegate 6-2.

However, despite their skilful netball Reds suffered two defeats by narrow margins, although almost causing an upset in losing to favourites Essex Open A 5-3 and Weston Park 6-5.

Unfortunately results meant the two Jersey sides would meet in the quarter-finals.

With a good knowledge of each other’s play, the game was very disrupted, but Whites emerged worthy winners 6-3.

Facing New Campbell A for the second time it was a fiercely contested semi-final with both teams demonstrating an outstanding standard to entertain the enthusiastic supporters - New Campbell managed to tip the balance in their favour, 1-0 by half time.

With the second half continuing goal for goal, Whites ran out of time to level the scores and missed out on the final, 7-6.

Coaches Jackie Nelson and Yveline Le Manach were delighted with the final placings and added that the expectations of the two teams had been fulfilled.

‘They had an excellent attitude and 100 per cent commitment throughout - all the girls rose to the challenge and lifted their game to achieve outstanding results,’ said Nelson.

Jersey Whites: Romy Smith, Melissa Luis, Lucy Le Lièvre, Lindsey Paton (vice-captain), Amelia Jones (captain), Charlotte Ng, Hannah Jauncey and Shadine Duquemin.

Jersey Reds: Kathryn Brammer, Courtney Le Mière, Rosie Tonner (vice-captain), Emily Moore, Elizabeth Appleyard, Zoe Cabot, Annie Bolle-Jones (captain), Sophie Botterill and Amy Matthews.
