Athletics:Dream start for CI Ladies

THE Channel Islands Athletic Club ladies track and field team produced a magnificent performance at Medway, Kent, last weekend.

Facing strong opposition, including one of the biggest clubs in the league, Herne Hill Harriers, they achieved an amazing victory which included six personal bests.

Once they showed that strength in depth is a huge attribute - that and a team spirit that is the envy of many.

Said team manager Andrew Winnie: ‘It sometimes seems as if we are the team that everyone wants to beat.

But, in reality, we should be “also rans” alongside such giants as Herne Hill, Windsor and the like.’ The main aim of the season is to finish in the top six and receive an invitation to contest the UK Women’s League Qualifier in September.

The top two in the qualifier are then promoted to the elite UK league, where the opposition is of the highest standard.

Athletes who produced personal best performances were: Katie Silva, 800m; Gemma Dawkins, 200m; Sophie Twinam, 100m hurdles; Gemma Tingay, hammer; Helen Watts, 1500m; Sarah Mercier, 1500m.
