Footballing knight on fact-finding mission

JERSEY football will hopefully take another step towards international recognition after meetings with a leading official in the sport today.

Sir David Richards, chairman of the FA Premier League and European Professional Leagues Association, is in the Island on a two-day fact finding visit while also visiting Island facilities and meeting with Jersey’s Chief Minister Senator Frank Walker and Minister of Sport Senator Mike Vibert.

Organised by Jersey Football Association president Ricky Weir in conjunction with Island resident and former Sunderland FC chairman Bob Murray, CBE, Sir David will listen to the case and political support for Jersey to gain wider international recognition in its quest for an appropriate fixture programmes for its senior representative teams.

Sir David has muted the possibility of bringing the Nike Premier League Cup tournament to Jersey, the under-15 competition is played between the 20 Premiership clubs possibly bringing around 400-plus players to Jersey.

The former Sheffield Wednesday chairman was responsible for helping set up the Football Foundation, a charitable body dedicated to developing the grassroots of the game.

His is now chairman of the Foundation which has attracted investment of £480 million, supporting more than 3,000 projects all over the country.

Sir Dave was awarded his knighthood for his services to sport in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2006.
