POLAND’S Marcin Jurkiewicz won his second men’s singles table tennis championship title last night at the Geoff Reed Centre.
On the opening night of four nights of finals at the Jersey Table Tennis Association’s FB Fields based clubhouse, Jurkiewicz recovered from going a game down to beat 2005 champion Paul Marsh 4-1.
In a match of excellent play, with some superb rallies, both players returned strong drives with counter-attacking with Jurkiewicz being a little more consistent of the two players.
Kay Lefebvre’s consistent defending overcame Dawn Buckley’s attacking play to retain the women’s title.
Lefebvre also took the Veterans’ title as the only entry.
The closest match of the evening was the men’s doubles final with Eugene Ellis and Jurkiewicz just holding off a strong recovery by veterans Clive Hansford and Bruce Gallichan.
Ellis, partnered by Bobby Vincent, was on the losing side in the Open doubles as Marshall and Trevor Lefebvre combined well moving their opponents around.
Malcolm Gallichan proved too steady for Doug Ferguson in the Over-60 singles, a match with long rallies, and Paul Routier didn’t really get going in the Over-50s final when he was beaten by former Island regular Bruce Gallichan.
