THE 2007 Insurance Corporation Jersey Open Volleyball tournament gets under way this weekend at Fort Regent with 25 teams competing including one from as far away as Zimbabwe.
Challenging in the men’s and mixed event, the Dolphins Volleyball Club from Harare, Zimbabwe is one of two new teams taking part this year - The Royal Air Force Hawks and Harriers being the other.
Last year’s men’s and mixed title winners St Malo return as do ladies’ winners Ashcombe and they will face competition from teams from the UK, Europe and the Channel Islands.
Joint tournament director Paul Adamson said: ‘Attracting a team from so far afield as Zimbabwe proves that the tournament really has established itself as an international event.
‘It’s also a great opportunity for Channel Island players preparing for this year’s Island Games to get experience playing such a high standard of volleyball.’ Games will be held in the Queen’s Hall and Gloucester Hall, and will start at 9 am on Saturday with the finals on Sunday from 2 pm.
