Toxic fumes feared as beach café burns

NORTH coast residents were told to shut their windows today amid fears that a fire had released clouds of toxic asbestos fumes.

Islanders were also warned to stay off cliffpaths above Grève de Lecq after the blaze engulfed a wooden café near the pier. An eyewitness reported flames leaping up to 80 feet into the air minutes after smoke started rising from the roof of the wooden Café de Lecq. John Arnold was about to have his breakfast when he saw two chefs and two other men running from the building at around 8.20. ‘There was just a small bit of smoke, but now it is well alight,’ he said at 8.40 on his mobile phone. ‘The flames are rising about 50 to 80 feet. Black smoke is billowing all over the place. It is very fierce. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. If anyone is in there, they won’t last two seconds.’
