TWENTY years ago they were in Victoria College’s CCF together and neither could have imagined that they would come back to Jersey one day as commanders of separate military units to mark Liberation Day.
Paul Pitcher was in the Combined Cadet Force’s Royal Navy section - and this week he sailed in his ship, HMS Tyne, to the Island. Joe Carnegie, meanwhile, was in the Army section - and he brought 36 men of his company of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment to join in the celebrations. Now both 35 years old, the two friends were reunited for the first time since Paul’s wedding in 2005. And the time before that was when Joe tied the knot in 2003. They are now at a level of seniority where they have a degree of control over what sizeable military assets - like a Royal Navy warship and a company of 160 soldiers - do, especially between tours of duty.
