A POLICEMAN has been accused of using work computers to look up people’s car number plates.
Pc Sean Osmand has been charged with misuse of police equipment and faces 38 counts of looking up registration numbers between June 2004 and May 2006. At a pre-trial review, defence lawyer Advocate Christopher Lakeman questioned whether it was in the public interest to prosecute the officer. He suggested that the matter should have been dealt with through disciplinary channels at work rather than through the courts at the expense of the taxpayer. He added that seven of the charges related to Osmand (40), looking up his own number plate. Two related to his son’s car and one concerned his daughter’s vehicle. He said: ‘Looking up one’s own J Reg number (and being prosecuted for it) could lead an external observer to conclude that Mr Osmand is being prosecuted for absolutely everything that can be thrown at him.’
