Powell battles back to make National Novice boxing semis

LEONIS boxer Ryan Powell is through to the semi-finals of the National Novice championships after storming back to a great victory in Yorkshire.

Trailing after the first three rounds to Steve Newlove of St Paul’s Hull ABC, though having forced a standing-eight count, the under-64 kilo Class B boxer put in a superb last-round to take the points decision in Knott, near Doncaster.

He will now go to Nottingham on 25 May for the semis.

Just missing out, despite a good last round, was clubmate Boyd Munroe, who lost to Steve Lax of Steel city ABC in Class A, 64 kilo.

Pisces ABC’s hope in Class A, under 60 kilo, Ryan Nicholl, also lost on points to Mohammed Al Eskry from Clackheaton ABC.

The boxers were accompanied by Dave Thompson and Brian Rousseau of Leonis and Pisces, respectively.

A Leonis team went down 4-3 to a Sheffield Select at Bramall Lane.
