Cricket:Island tourism set to benefit from tournament

TOURISM should be a major beneficiary of the International Cricket Council’s decision to award the World Division V tournament to Jersey next year.

The tournament, recently enlarged to include 12 teams, will be held next year in May or June.

But although that will involve hundreds of players and officials jetting into the Island the real boost will be the exposure the Island gets around the world through various media before, during and after the week-long event.

The fact that Jersey cricket were able to demonstrate States support, in the form of ICC inspectors meeting with ministers and the Lieut-Governor, Lieutenant General Andrew Ridgway recently, will have played no small part in winning this big tournament.

Tourism are sure to want to get involved as they will have a unique opportunity to sell the Island to representatives and media of the 11 visiting countries.

While the prospect of Afghanistan meeting the USA may raise one or two eyebrows the latter are still subject to the raising of a current suspension following their demotion from Division III.
