Fantastic boost as Hash Half pulls in first-timers

THE Total Sport Fantastic North Run looks set to feature the highest number of runners for many years as it gets under way tomorrow morning.

Despite visitor entries a little down on last year at 70, the local entries are much higher than normal with an inspiring 98 runners entering their first ever half marathon.

At present there are 330 runners although it is estimated that this could rise to 400 with late entries.

The Hash House Harriers annual half marathon, supported by ESC, starts in the car park opposite Les Fontaines Tavern, St John at 9 am and runners will then wind their way through 13 miles of countryside in Jersey’s northern parishes before finishing at the northern end of St Ouen’s Bay.

The holder of the long-standing women’s course record, Kathryn Bailey, has entered, but the leading lady in Island distance running, Jo Gorrord (née McGarry), is not planning to run as she has her focus set on middle distance events in next month’s Island Games.

The children’s two-mile race is also proving extremely popular with 86 entries now received and for the first time there will be wheel chair competitors with members of the JSAD having trained for the event.

These races will start minutes apart at around 9.45 am and will follow a road-based route.

The official charity for this year’s race is the Jersey Sports Association for the Disabled and everyone who finishes receives a t-shirt and medal while the presentation ceremony takes place in the afternoon at Hotel De Normandie.

Late entries will be accepted on the day for the half marathon only at £20 - see www.jerseyhalf.com for more details.
