Go-ahead for Castle Quay plan

DANDARA’S plans for Jersey’s waterfront have been approved by the Environment Minister.

Senator Freddie Cohen said that Castle Quay - which will consist of 358 flats and 85,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space - fits in with the long-term plans for St Helier. The plans are a far cry from the three towers planned for the site in 2006, which led to public outcry and mass protests from Islanders. Instead of skyscrapers, the tallest building is seven storeys. Senator Cohen told a public hearing yesterday that the development had the support of world-famous architect, and ‘waterfront supremo’ Sir Michael Hopkins and represented a turning point for Jersey’s waterfront. ‘It is with great pleasure that I approve the application and I hope we have turned the corner in our efforts to create a waterfront of which the Island can be proud,’ Senator Cohen said.
