A BINGO hall, a Trocadero-type facility for youngsters and a dry ski slope are among new activities that could help modernise Fort Regent, says a report prepared by users of the complex.
And the Support the Fort Liaison Group says that high-speed lifts should be built at Snow Hill to allow people to get to Fort Regent. The group claims that the installation of lifts would increase usage at the complex by 15 to 20%. The group, which is chaired by unsuccessful election candidate Roy Travert, proposes the new facilities among a list of possible ideas to attract more people to use the Fort but they say sport should remain the major use for the site. The report also says that a town park-type development could be appropriate for the Fort and argues that a sports hotel should be built at the centre to cater for visiting players and teams. The group has issued a report on the Fort’s future in response to the conclusions of a recently published report on the future of St Helier compiled by States-employed consultants EDAW. The Support the Fort group rejects EDAW’s conclusions that the Rotunda roof should be removed but it does support another recommendation that an interpretation centre be included to promote the historical value of the facility. Meanwhile, the group wants to see swimming reintroduced as part of any future redevelopment of Fort Regent.
