Consultant is still suspended

A CONSULTANT gynaecologist is still ’suspended without prejudice’ on full pay following the death of a patient in October last year.

John Day remains ‘excluded’ while police and internal investigations continue into the death of Elizabeth Rourke. The 49-year-old orthopaedic nurse, who worked on Beauport ward at the General Hospital, died when a routine operation went wrong. Mr Day has not worked since 18 October last year. A second doctor, who is believed to have been left in charge of the surgical procedure following the departure of Mr Day from the operating theatre, no longer works for Health and Social Services. She was employed as a locum junior doctor at the time of Mrs Rourke’s death. Richard Jouault, the director of corporate planning and performance management at Health, said that Mr Day would continue to be excluded until such time as all investigations were complete.
