News from the Jersey Evening Post

Tackling a prickly subject

ISLANDERS are being asked to take part in a survey to find out how many hedgehogs there are in Jersey.

The survey was launched by UK zoologist Pat Morris and Dru Burdon from the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group. Mr Morris, a former lecturer of zoology at the University of London who specialised in mammal ecology, visited the Island to encourage as many people as possible to provide information. He said a UK study had shown that over a ten-year period the number of hedgehogs being killed on the roads had dropped by 30 per cent - which at first glance sounds like good news but could be indicative of a fall in the mammal’s population. ‘The number of cars around certainly has not decreased and so it appears there are fewer hedgehogs around,’ he said.
