THE Island’s most successful ever artist is to be the subject of a major exhibition at the Tate Britain museum.
One hundred and fifty pieces of Sir John Everett Millais’s work will go on display at the renowned national museum later this year before going on tour around the world. The exhibition will include the artist’s painting of Lillie Langtry, which is being loaned to them by the Jersey Museum, where it is usually housed. Co-curator of the exhibition Dr Alison Smith is encouraging the people of Jersey to see the show. ‘We are very excited about this exhibition,’ she said. ‘It will be a ground-breaking show, as Millais was an incredibly popular artist.’ Millais was the greatest painter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and is perhaps best known for his iconic painting Ophelia. Almost as widely recognised is Bubbles, a portrait of his infant grandson which was turned into an advertisement for Pears soap.
