Parents save nursery strangled by red tape

A 32-YEAR-OLD nursery has been saved from closure by five of its children’s parents.

Silver Star, which has 28 children, is based at the community centre next to St Mary’s School. It is a parent-run nursery with charitable status. And according to one of the parents who have saved it, Elena Moran, just a month ago its future seemed bleak. ‘Over the years the administrative burden of running the nursery has increased, and things like Itis, data protection and new employment laws have all added to the time it takes to run the nursery and placed an increased burden on the parents on the management committee,’ she said. ‘Things came to a head in the Easter term when no parents came forward to take over from the incumbent members of the committee, all of whom wanted to retire after serving for several years. With no committee or some replacement structure, the nursery would have had to close.’ According to Dr Moran, parish Constable Ken Le Brun and the head teacher of St Mary’s School, Linda McKenzie, came forward to try to find a solution.
