STRONG assurances were given last night that the waterfront will not become a white elephant.
And although the first few years of building the next phase, which will probably involve sinking Route de la Liberation between the underpass and the Gloucester Street junction, are likely to be ‘miserable’ according to Environment Minister Freddie Cohen, he assured Islanders that the end result will be a waterfront they can be proud of. Senator Cohen was one of six panellists who spoke at the annual debate of the Institute of Directors, which was sponsored by law firm Carey Olsen. Entitled ‘Achieving a coherent vision of St Helier’, the debate proved to be a lively discussion which unsurprisingly concentrated on the parish’s evolving waterfront. Models of the waterfront masterplan, which has been designed by London-based architect Sir Michael Hopkins and his team, were unveiled for the first time and details emerged of the ‘East of Albert’ plan for the Harbour.
