News from the Jersey Evening Post

Use Island talent, says Chamber

BUSINESS leaders are stepping up the pressure on the States to award contracts locally rather than to outside companies.

Citing the example of the Jersey brand contract which went to international marketing firm Corporate Edge, former Chamber of Commerce chairman Bob Hassell has asked members to come up with other instances of States contracts going outside the Island. In an article in the latest Chamber Online publication, Mr Hassell writes: ‘There has been concern for some time among a wide variety of Jersey businesses that the States seem too easily prepared to give work to organisations outside of Jersey without, in many cases, even inviting interest from local companies that appear better qualified or at least no less competent. ‘It seems fairly obvious to chamber that wherever possible local businesses should be encouraged to tender for all States work.
