GALE force winds, heavy rain, hail and thunder storms all caused disruption to travel and events over the bank holiday weekend.
Among the casualties was yesterday’s horse racing at Les Landes, which was cancelled. Marquees went flying at the racecourse as well as at the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity, where the Foire de Jersey was being held. Some ferry sailings were cancelled while passengers reported highly uncomfortable crossings because of heavy sea swells on others. Trees were blown over and crews were out clearing roads. * On Saturday the St Helier lifeboat went to the aid of three men and a dog who had fallen into the water after their speedboat capsized at Anne Port. * Lifeguards on duty for the first time this summer rescued two men from their upturned boat on Saturday in St Brelade’s Bay. John Bathos (63) and Mike Smith (65), both of St Brelade, had been sailing the 14-ft Privateer dinghy for about an hour when a strong gust of wind capsized them.
