DAIRY farmers have backed what is arguably the biggest change for Jersey’s famous breed in over 150 years.
They have voted overwhelmingly to support the importation of bull semen, which has always been banned in the Island. Chief Minister Frank Walker has said that, following their decision, he will now take a proposition to the States calling for the ban to be lifted. Of the 33 dairy farmers in Jersey, 26 attended a specially convened meeting in April to cast their vote. Nearly 80 per cent were in favour of lifting the ban. They own 81 per cent of the 3,490 milk-producing cows in Jersey.
