THE petition against the goods and services tax has now been signed by 15,000 people.
Consumer Council chairman Deputy Alan Breckon is urging the public to attend tomorrow’s ‘Say No to GST’ rally in the Royal Square which he has organised. He said that GST was likely to be the biggest thing ever to hit Jersey consumers and he still believes that there are alternatives. ‘This is certainly going to be the largest petition ever presented to the States,’ he said. But Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur is adamant it will all be in vain. Asked today whether a turnout of 40,000 tomorrow would change his mind, he said: ‘We have listened over the last three years when we decided what the best way forward was. I appreciate people’s point of view but they may be going to the Royal Square under a bit of a misapprehension that we have not thought about the alternatives to GST. They have been misled, maybe innocently, but misled into thinking there is an alternative.’
