News from the Jersey Evening Post

Call to bar boats off Plémont to save its puffins

BOATS could be barred from going within 600 metres of the cliffs around Plémont to protect Jersey’s dwindling puffin population from extinction.

It has been recommended that an exclusion zone be established around breeding sites on the Plémont headland, possibly from Grand Becquet, just west of Grve de Lecq, to Petit Plémont.

In other parts of the world such zones range from between 200 and 600 metres from sea bird cliffs - and it is those models that Jersey is likely to follow.

If adopted, the zone could apply to everyone from kayakers to fishermen and would most likely apply from March to August, when the birds visit the Island.

The recommendations are included in a report by Dr Glyn Young, the deputy head of the bird department at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Some are found in his conclusions, while others are made by a number of other Island ornithologists who were invited to comment on his report.
