Housing crunch

MINISTERS are struggling to cope with the mounting pressure on Jersey’s housing resources.

Emergency measures taken yesterday include a U-turn by Housing Minister Terry Le Main on the sale of flats to outside investors and a change in planning policy to allow new homes in town without private parking.

In a week which has seen the average price of a three-bedroom house rise to £470,000 and the revelation that very few Islanders outside the highly paid finance industry can afford to apply for mortgages, more signs have emerged that the related questions of economic development, immigration and housing will be among this year’s major election issues.

Earlier this week, Senator Le Main dealt a blow to the hopes of many people who had been building up their housing qualifications by freezing the planned reduction in the qualifying period from its present 12 years.
