States reject voting plans

MOVES to let Islanders qualify to vote after just a year have been rejected by a two-to-one margin.

The States rejected Deputy Geoff Southern’s proposals, which would also have opened up the electoral roll, by 31 votes to 14.

The St Helier No 2 Deputy said he was disappointed by the vote, which he said had effectively ruled out the last chance for voting reform ahead of the elections.

‘The next elections are coming and we need to act now,’ he said, noting that the promised ‘rolling register’ had not materialised.
