Jersey Open attracts bumper entry from UK

THIS weekend’s Jersey Open Netball Tournament is set to be the biggest yet, with 20 teams taking part.

Jersey’s Convent team are the defending champions and will face opposition from local teams St Lawrence, Saints (St Lawrence B team) and Accies.

The other 16 teams taking part are from all around England, including London, Kent, Warwickshire, Hertfordshire, Manchester, Weymouth and Oxford.

Three new clubs make the journey to Fort Regent for the two-day event - Prison Service, LMR and Weybridge Vandals.

Mary Stanley is making a return with fellow A Award umpire Debbie Morgan to provide invaluable skills and support.

The action gets under way on Saturday in Queen’s Hall and Gloucester Hall with qualifying from 9.30 am to 2.15 pm, in which six-minute games will be played between the teams, split into three groups. The top three plus the team who has the best results against them will form the Trophy Section and the remaining teams will enter the Plate Tournament.

The competition then continues from 3 pm to 5 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 4.30 pm with ten teams split into two sections before play-offs to make the final.

Presentations will conclude the tournament, with awards going to the winners and runners-up of the two competitions, the best umpire, and also for fair play. Spectators are welcome and there is plenty of seating on offer.

The groups will be grouped as follows for the first-round games:

Group 1: 1: Convent, Dominoes I, London Lionhearts II, LMR II, Old Actonians A, Saints, Waterside. Group 2: Abbey I, Dominoes II, LMR I, Prison Service, SAS Reds, St Lawrence, Weybridge Vandals. Group 3: Abbey II, Accies, Daggers, London Lionhearts I, Old Actonians B, SAS.
