Revealed: First-hand experience

IT was not the elderly staff or the German soldiers that Frederick Carpenter feared during his 12 years at Haut de la Garenne.

As he lay in his dormitory bed, it was the older boys who, during the Occupation, came to live in what was then called the Boys’ Home.

‘The cruelty that happened there meant that it was almost like a hell camp,’ said Mr Carpenter, now aged 76, of Causie Drive, St Clement. ‘It was unbelievable. I can’t describe a lot of it because it was too bad. It was just bullying, cruel bullying. The old staff in charge tried to do the best they could, but there were too many boys.’
