News from the Jersey Evening Post

UK politicians call for external judicial inquiry into child abuse in Jersey

A FULL judicial inquiry into child abuse and any cover-up of abuse in Jersey has been proposed in the House of Commons.

The news follows Saturday’s discovery of the remains of a child underneath the former children’s home at Haut de la Garenne.

Long-time Jersey critic Austin Mitchell MP has tabled an ‘Early Day Motion’ calling for the inquiry, and for independent UK judges and prosecutors to deal with any criminal or civil cases arising from the current investigation.

Chief Minister Frank Walker has defended Jersey’s judges and prosecutors - and has said that the investigations and prosecutions will be ‘pursued with the utmost rigour and professionalism’.
