Academy U15s have hard act to follow - but they can

THE big crowd that will undoubtedly be attracted to Jersey RFC’s vital promotion match against Chobham tomorrow should think twice about leaving St Peter at the final whistle.

For some of Jersey’s stars of the future - the Academy’s U15s - will be continuing their bid to make history for themselves.

Kicking off after the first-team’s big match, the U15s will attempt to top Hampshire Division I and set themselves up for a final surge to win the Academy’s first ever county league title.

They face New Milton knowing that three points for victory would lift them above leaders Havant, who don’t play this weekend, by one point. Along with Winchester, currently level on points with Jersey but with an inferior points difference, Havant and Jersey have yet to taste defeat. And, most fittingly, Jersey’s last two fixtures after tomorrow are … Winchester and Havant.

But Ashburton coach Barry George, like he does with the seniors, will have emphasised the importance of concentrating on the job in hand. New Milton must be overcome or title hopes could be shattered. But Jersey, the top scorers in the division by some way, are in form. Just ask Portsmouth, who were shattered by ten tries last time out.

Home debut

This will be the team’s first league match at home but, backed by Sanne Group, they have been moulded with some tough away experiences, including the recent Sanne international tournament at Welford Road in Leicester, when they reached the final before going down to a powerful Newbury Blues side.
