Sport from the Jersey Evening Post

Crunch time now for Jersey

THE next two weeks will almost certainly decide which division Jersey RFC, the unbeaten leaders of London South II, play in next season.

First, against Chobham at home tomorrow, they take on the third-placed team who might be five points below them but who are playing their best rugby of their season.

Chobham’s last win, two weeks ago, was 24-8 against a Sidcup XV Jersey could only draw with when they played them at St Peter.

And next week, at Hayward’s Heath, they play the second-placed team, currently only one point below them.

Two wins and at long last there will be three points at least between them and the chasing sides. After that, they have three games left - against the current three bottom sides - to win automatic promotion to London I. Yet one defeat from either game and unbeaten Jersey’s fate could be out of their hands.

Coach Barry George doesn’t quite see it like that, however. ‘Personally I’m looking forward to a tough game before we take on Hayward’s Heath,’ he said.

‘For the players, these two matches will be a defining moment in their season. If the team put in a good performance it will keep us on a roll going into next week’s game.

‘I hope it’s not too wet, because with the team we have we want to run the ball wide. Chobham are a pretty fit outfit and they’ll have a point to prove, after we defeated them over there.
