News from the Jersey Evening Post

Wet and wild

ISLANDERS awoke to scenes of chaos and destruction this morning as one of the biggest storms of the year battered coastal defences.

The extreme weather conditions sent waves crashing over sea walls leaving homes and business flooded on the south and east coasts.

High winds uprooted trees and traffic was brought to a standstill as roads disappeared under foaming water.

St Aubin and Beaumont were two of the worst affected areas, with up to two feet of water sitting in several shops, restaurants and houses.

And as the clear-up operation began, there were warnings that more is yet to come this evening, when another high tide will be aggravated by strong winds and big swell.

Sea and air travel were also seriously disrupted.
