Tour de France legend Hinault in Jersey next week

JERSEY Tourism have pulled off a major sporting coup with the visit of five-times Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault to the Island next week.

Although he retired in 1986, the French cycling legend, pictured, still has many records to his name, not least being the only man ever to have twice won each of the Grand Tour events - Le Tour, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a Espana.

Nicknamed the Badger, for being extremely difficult to shrug off, he is particularly a huge figure in Brittany, an area that Jersey Tourism is keen to promote.

Tourism’s Mike Tait was delighted that Hinault accepted an invitation to visit the Island - and cycle around it on Tuesday - particularly as he will be accompanied by a range of media from Brittany.

The invitation was issued by the Tourism officer after Hinault came over for the Jersey leg of the Tour de Bretagne cycling race last year.

Said the Tourism official: ‘This is the french equivalent of a footballing superstar like Bobby Charlton visiting. It is a great way to spread the word about Jersey in France.’
