St Paul’s one point off claiming Island footballing championship

ONE more point and St Paul’s will be crowned James Marquis Memorial Trophy Division I champions in the Coca-Cola Jersey Football Combination.

The Saints breezed to a 6-0 victory at St Saviour against relegated First Tower on Saturday putting them within striking distance of their first title since 2000.

Liam Walsh fired them ahead with a super volley into a top corner from 25 yards before Nathan Taylor added a brace finishing off a couple of flowing moves.

St Paul’s were three up inside 30 minutes and they added to their tally in the closing 25 minutes through Mark Lucas, Craig Leitch (penalty) and substitute Jamie Cullen.

St Paul’s are now six points clear of second-placed Trinity with one game to play, at home to St Peter on Saturday 12 April.

Trinity have two to play, at home to Grouville on Tuesday 8 April and then against Jersey Wanderers at the Hockey Club on Saturday 12 April.

Should St Paul’s fail to take a point against St Peter and Trinity win both their games then there will be a play-off for the title for the second time in three seasons.

Comfortable victories for promoted Sporting Academics and St Ouen in Division II, 8-1 against Jersey Nomads and 5-0 against St Lawrence respectively, mean the Accies will win the title if St Ouen fail to win the division’s last game of the season - at St Clement on Saturday 12 April.

St Clement Reserves went to the top of Division II Reserves after beating previous leaders Portuguese Club of Jersey 4-2 at St Clement. The Saints have finished their programme and Portuguese will be crowned champions if they win at Trinity on Saturday 12 April.

A defeat would leave St Clement as champions while a draw would result in a play-off.

Division C appears to be heading for a play-off too after Jersey Wanderers drew level with Grouville on 38 point after winning 7-1 at the Hockey Club against St Brelade.

Grouville’s final game is at St Ouen on Wednesday 9 April while Wanderers host St Peter three days later.
