Shoppers stock up before GST bites

SHOPPERS have packed the Co-op over the last two days, making the most of the last two GST-free ‘double divi’ days.

Pensioners in particular were stockpiling non-perishable goods like rice, tea and cooking oil before the three per cent tax comes in on Tuesday.

The deputy manager of Grand Marche in St Helier, Gary Tye, said that sales were 15 per cent above normal double-dividend days.

‘The long-life items have sold really well,’ he said. ‘People have been buying lots of pet foods, rice and non-perishables and household items have sold really well.’

He added, however, that they had not experienced any shortages.
