Fall in number of young offenders

FIGURES show that the number of persistant young offenders has halved in recent years.

Five years ago, around 80 children aged between ten and 13 were repeatedly engaging in anti-social behaviour.

But the States police say that figure has dropped significantly to just over 40 in the last two years.

Lesley Harrison, chairman of Prison! Me! No Way! believes that they, along with other agencies, may have helped to bring these figures down.

‘We are not promoting Prison! Me! No! Way! as a universal panacea in reducing youth crime or attributing success to any one initiative and it’s certainly too early to state with confidence that this represents lasting change,’ she said.

‘But we do believe that the scheme, alongside a variety of other preventative work with young people, is playing its part in effecting behaviour change among up and coming generations as they enter these formative years.’
