Barely-bridled anticipation!

As spring breaks forth in all its greenery and glory after a spectacularly long and brutal winter here in Central Canada the thoughts of a select group of people here and around the world are thinking about spring elsewhere.

The focus of thoughts is England and France and most of all, a precious piece of land known far and wide as Jersey. World Jersey Cattle Bureau events will take place in these three locales from May 10 to June 1. The centre-piece will be the 18th International Conference of the Bureau on Jersey during the week of May 18th to 25th! This event holds so much historic import. For a variety of reasons this will be the first time that the Bureau has returned to Jersey for a World Conference since a record-breaking rendition way back in 1979, almost three decades ago!!

For many of the large number of delegates, arriving from likely over 20 countries this will be a first visit to the famed island where both the story of the breed and the story of the Bureau began! Others, including this writer have been blessed to have trod on Jersey’s soil before-in my case four previous times-1986, 1992, 1994 and most recently April 2006! Two firm convictions have arisen from my previous and totally glorious visits to Jersey-everyone who has a passion and connection with the Jersey cow should make a huge effort to visit Jersey at least once in their lifetime and-Jersey is SO much more than just the cows! The endless scenic vistas, the warm welcomes one receives from unforgettable people, the food, the attractions, all overflowing and all packed into one small island!

And so, this journey to Jersey and neighbouring countries from far-flung corners of the earth will have aspects of a pilgrimage, of touristic intrigue and decidedly of coming home to starting point of a story of a profitable breed of cattle who are attracting rapidly increasing amounts of positive attention around the globe!

Excitement reigns-this past week (this is written May 3rd) we’ve had communication from New York state in the United States, from South Africa, from British Columbia on the west coast of Canada and Nova Scotia on the east coast of this vast land, from other Canadian provinces like Ontario and Quebec and from Australia and Uruguay all centered on the anticipation of what will be learned, experienced, savoured and shared during the high point of high points when the actual conference unfolds on Jersey.

Mrs. Anne Perchard of La Ferme in rural St, Martin’s parish is officially known as Patron of the Bureau. In truth she is more fittingly known as matron of the World Jersey Cattle Bureau as we fondly refer to her as the Universal Queen Mum of the breed world-wide. Dear Annie has noted that in our hemisphere of the world May brings spring and renewal and resurrection of life and thus May can be dubbed: “The Queen of the year!”

This May will be a special, special rendition of “The Queen of the year” for those Jersey supporters who are blessed enough to “come home” to Jersey for the conference and an unending parade of highlights that will surround it!

Can we wait? We’ll have to but my, the waiting will be a constant blissful challenge!
