SOME shops are charging GST-inclusive prices ahead of the legal introduction of the new tax on Tuesday.
And the Income Tax department’s deputy director of GST said the stores concerned were ‘naughty’ for jumping the gun.
However, computer software limitations have forced many retailers to download new prices in phases over the last few days.
As a result, some customers have been mistakenly charged GST-inclusive prices by shop assistants unaware of discrepancies.
Meanwhile the Time 4 Change protest group will hold a rally against GST in the Royal Square at lunchtime on Tuesday.
They want to promote alternatives to the tax and make sure Islanders know who voted for it in the run-up to this year’s elections. GST starts on Tuesday, and the 3% tax is expected to raise £30m of taxpayers’ money by the end of the year.
