100 cyclists on a freedom ride

CYCLISTS were reminded why their support is so valuable at Amnesty International’s 13th annual Tour de Freedom cycle ride on Sunday morning.

Before the 100 riders set off on their journey around the Island, Amnesty’s chairwoman, Collette Crill read out a quote from the brother of a wrongly imprisoned death row victim.

‘As you cycle, know that you are cycling for a fantastic cause,’ she said. ‘Amjad Hussein, brother of Mirza Hussein, who was released after 18 years in prison, said: “My family are indebted to the people who campaigned for Mirza’s release, who wrote letters and stood out in the rain with placards. Every life is precious. Mirza’s release just proves how vital these campaigns really are”.’

The cyclists set off from the Steam Clock, St Helier, at 10.30 am. They had a choice of two routes with the longest being 37.5 miles.
