A 5P LEVY on plastic bags was introduced in major supermarkets this morning with profits from sales going to local environmental projects.
The scheme, which involves the Channel Islands Co-op, Sandpiper CI stores and Marks and Spencer in Jersey and Guernsey and some other retailers, is aimed at drastically reducing the amount of plastic carrier bags used in the community.
Spar stores around the Island were also due today to introduce a 5p charge for their smaller plastic carrier bags and a 10p charge for the bigger variety.
CI Newsagents’ R-Stores are due to introduce the 5p levy on plastic carrier bags within the next few weeks.
