News from the Jersey Evening Post

Girls’ hope for a new future

JERSEY’S generosity is helping to build a new future for these girls.

In October 2005, the devastating Pakistan earthquake destroyed their school at Mera Bakot in Kashmir. Since then, their lessons have taken place

in makeshift classrooms under canvas.

Now a new school for up to 300 girls is taking shape at Mera Bakot, thanks to funds raised by Jersey Side by Side, the community charity set up to help disaster victims following the 2004 tsunami.

Working in partnership with the British Red Cross, Jersey Side by Side set out to raise £80,000 towards the project and the target is now in sight.

The new school will come closer to reality following the second Jersey Evening Post Big Disc Sale, to be held on Saturday 17 May at Hautlieu.
